Panhalagad
Panhala Fort, located in the Kolhapur district of Maharashtra, is a magnificent historical site with immense significance in Maratha history. Built in the late 12th century by the Shilahara dynasty and later enhanced by the Yadavas of Devagiri, the fort served as a major center of operations for the Maratha Empire. Panhala Fort is famously associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who strategically used it as a base and spent a significant amount of time here. One of the most notable events in the fort's history is the Siege of Panhala in 1660, where Shivaji Maharaj managed a daring escape from the fort, evading the forces of Bijapur Sultanate led by Siddi Johar.
The fort's architectural marvels include the Teen Darwaza, the main entrance with three consecutive gates designed for enhanced security, and the Sajja Kothi, a beautiful pavilion. The Ambarkhana, large granaries used to store food supplies, and the Andhar Bavadi, a concealed well with a spiraling staircase used for water supply during sieges, are other significant structures. The Mahalaxmi Temple within the fort premises showcases the spiritual side of the fort.
Positioned at an altitude of 845 meters above sea level, Panhala Fort offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, making it a popular destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers. Its expansive grounds, historical structures, and scenic vistas provide a glimpse into the rich Maratha heritage and the strategic brilliance of its architecture.
Vishalgad
Vishalgad Fort, also known as Khelna or Khilna, is a historic fort located in the Kolhapur district of Maharashtra. Constructed by the Shilahara dynasty in the early 11th century, the fort later came under the control of the Marathas and played a pivotal role in the Maratha Empire's history. One of the most significant events associated with Vishalgad is the battle on July 13, 1660, when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, after his daring escape from Panhala Fort, successfully reached Vishalgad. This event was marked by the heroic last stand of Baji Prabhu Deshpande at the nearby Ghodkhind pass, now known as Pavankhind, where he delayed the pursuing forces to allow Shivaji to reach the safety of Vishalgad.
The fort is renowned for its strategic location atop a steep hill, offering commanding views of the surrounding area. Important structures within the fort include the Sati's Vrindavan, where memorials for Maratha women are located, and the Amrit Kunda, a water reservoir. The fort also houses several temples, including the Lord Shiva temple, which holds religious significance for the local population. The ruins of palaces and fortifications scattered throughout the fort tell tales of its historical importance.
Vishalgad's historical significance is rooted in its role as a formidable stronghold for the Marathas, serving as a strategic base for various military campaigns. The fort's name, meaning "grand fort," is a testament to its impressive scale and the crucial role it played in the defense strategies of the Maratha Empire. Today, Vishalgad stands as a monument to the bravery and tactical acumen of the Maratha warriors, attracting history enthusiasts and trekkers eager to explore its storied past and breathtaking vistas.
Pawankhind
Pavankhind, a narrow mountain pass located in the Sahyadri mountain range of Maharashtra, holds immense historical significance due to its association with one of the most heroic episodes in Maratha history. The pass is famously known for the Battle of Pavankhind, which took place on July 13, 1660. This battle is marked by the extraordinary bravery and sacrifice of Baji Prabhu Deshpande, a loyal commander of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. During the conflict, Shivaji Maharaj was escaping from the besieged Panhala Fort towards the safety of Vishalgad. To ensure his escape, Baji Prabhu Deshpande and a small contingent of Maratha soldiers made a valiant last stand at Pavankhind, holding off the pursuing forces of the Bijapur Sultanate led by Siddi Masud. Their courageous defense allowed Shivaji to safely reach Vishalgad, though it cost Baji Prabhu and many of his men their lives.
Pavankhind is not known for elaborate structures, but its narrow and strategic location made it a formidable natural fortification. The pass itself is a significant natural structure, with steep cliffs and dense forests surrounding it, creating a challenging terrain for any invading force. The area is now marked by a memorial dedicated to Baji Prabhu Deshpande and his brave soldiers, commemorating their sacrifice and valor.
The historical significance of Pavankhind lies in its role as the site of one of the most dramatic and heroic events in Maratha history. The battle demonstrated the unwavering loyalty and bravery of Shivaji Maharaj’s followers, significantly contributing to the legend of Shivaji and the Maratha resistance against larger adversaries. Today, Pavankhind stands as a symbol of sacrifice and courage, attracting history enthusiasts and trekkers who seek to pay homage to the bravery of Baji Prabhu Deshpande and his men while experiencing the rugged beauty of the Sahyadri mountains.
