History mentions that Bhojraj, a descendant of the Shilahar Dynasty built this fort. Hence it can be assumed that this fort is at least 800 years old. The Portuguese rebuilt this fort after they captured it during their rule. In 1737, Peshwa won this fort during his campaign of the Konkan and in 1818 this fort came under the British rule.

  On the plateau of Asherigad Fort, you will find the ruins of dilapidated mansions. Many platforms are designed to carry away rainwater and wastewater collected around the houses. The cave on the fort is medium-sized with a wide entrance, skillfully carved into the rock to block the entry of strong winds and cold. The surface of the cave is very rough, but stone beds ('berths') have been made for the guards to sleep inside and outside.
